OnePlus 5 Review
OnePlus is one of a unique Chinese Phone manufacturer we have, they have a tradition releasing just as a single device yearly except for last year when they released the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T. Well, OnePlus are back again with an even more impressive but their priciest device yet – the OnePlus 5.
The device packs the spec of a 2017 flagship device; it comes with the powerful Snapdragon 835 chipset, a 6GB/8GB RAM and a 64GB/128GB memory storage, a 16MP + 20MP rear dual camera setup and Oxygen OS (which runs on Android 7.1.1). Clearly, the device is apowerpackeddevice.
Design
This is definitely the most controversial aspect of the OnePlus 5, why? The back of thephone looks just like the back of the iPhone 7 Plus especially in the layout of the dual camera. The controversial aspect aside, the OnePlus does look nice, a sleek all metallic phone with curvy edges, very simplistic design. At the front you have a 5.5 display made of Gorilla Glass 5, it has a front button that also doubles as a fingerprint scanner. The OnePlus 5 comes in two colour variant, the Midnight Black and the Slate Gray, no bright colours, the former goes for $479 while the latter will set you back $539.
Hardware Performance
Things are fascinating in this department, there is the very efficient Snapdragon 835 under the hood coupled with a 6GB RAM/ 64GB storage and 8GB RAM/128 GB storage for the Slate Gray and Midnight Black variants respectively, ensuring a speedy device. No room for extra memory but 64GB or 128GB should be enough.
A combo of such lavish amount of RAM and the Snapdragon 835 can handle anything, throw in heavy graphics games and 4K videos. Install a vastnumber of apps, and you can be sure you won’t experience any lag.
An 8GB RAM will not be used entirely by the device in app management, and OnePlus even said it does not expect users to take advantage of the extra RAM, but it believes that developers can use it to bring more out of the device.
Software
Just like every other OnePlus phone, the OnePlus 5 runs on the Oxygen OS based on Android Nougat. The goodthing about the Oxygen OS is that it is lightweight just like the Stock Android and on the OnePlus 5 it has improved with some exciting new features including Reading Mode, Gaming Do Not Disturb mode, off-screen gestures, Secure box, Auto night mode and Expanded screenshot.
The Reading mode give you a similar experience to what you get on e-readers like Kindles, it turns your phone grayscale, you can change the colour temperature of your screen to adjust to the ambient light around you, so as to reduce strain on your eyes while reading especially at night. Auto NightMode allows you to set night mode to takeoff at sunset and end at sunrise, a similar experience to what apps like Twilight offer.
Camera and Battery
Things are kept very simple in the battery section, you have a 3300 mAh battery and a 90 minutes charge can take you all day. OnePlus has its own fast charge technology with Dash Charge, the good thing about Dash charge is in the Dash Charger, the Charger does not increase voltage, unlike other Quick Charge solutions. Instead, it increases the electricity amperage, so more current gets into the phone. The charger alone handles this process and just send more current to the phone, so the phone does not become uncomfortably hot while charging and that is good for the battery.
The camera is a lot more impressive than previous OnePlus models, OnePlus joined the trend of rear dual camera setup with the OnePlus 5. The main camera at the back is a 16MP shooter with a Sony IMX 398 image sensor and f/1.7 aperture while the secondary camera is a 20MP shooter with a Sony IMX 350 image sensor and f/2.6 aperture. Both cameras can shoot 4k videos. At the front, we have a 16MP camera for selfie lovers out there. The secondary camera gives a 2X magnification without stressing the image, with the dual cameras, you should get quality portrait pictures.
